Hard to believe, but the Ford Mustang will be 50 years old in 2014 and the 2015 model on the right, has just been unveiled. Undeniably a Mustang, but with smooth lines, which say completely up to date. Now you know how they update an icon.
I could go back and look at all the previous models, but everyone is doing that, so let's take a look at some of the most famous versions over the years. No pics of this one, but Wilson Pickett's song "Mustang Sally" is the most well known Mustang song (actually can't think of another one).
Way back in '74, the original version of "Gone in Sixty Seconds", featured a stock Mustang fastback..........
......involved in a car chase that must have lasted half of the movie, this car was like a Timex watch, in that it took a beating and kept on ticking. This bad movie was remade a few years back and this equally bad redo featured a somewhat different Mustang........
This car was called Eleanor and was the focus of the movie, but it wasn't trashed like in the original. Strangely though, this car became famous and copies have sprung up all over the place. Go to the Barrett-Jackson auction and watch these clones bring huge money. Go figure, since it's just a modified '68 Shelby.
But talk about the most famous Mustang of them all. Take a guess.........
If you said the "Bullitt" Mustang, give yourself a gold star. This dark green fastback, from the movie starring Steve McQueen, was involved in what is usually considered to be the numero uno movie car chase ever. Against a Dodge Charger, racing thru the streets of San Francisco, this chase never grows old (check it out on youtube). This "Stang has become so well known, that Ford has introduced several Bullitt Mustang editions over the years, complete with exhaust systems tuned to a late '60's sound.
Yep, the Ford Mustang has hit 50 years old. Never had one myself, preferring to stick with GM products like the Camaro and Corvette, but this new one looks like a gem. Wonder how many sets of golf clubs will fit under that rear hatch?
Fifty years old and it all started like this.........
Talk about a car defining a market segment. Even though it is currently being out sold by the Camaro, mention pony car and folks think Mustang. Not bad for a 50 year old, eh? Congratulations, ol' hoss.
Until next time.......
